This is a hybrid event co-organized by the PEOPLE Network<\/strong> (Memorial University), the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation<\/strong> (University of Prince Edward Island), the Sigma Academy, Center for Catastrophic Risk Management<\/strong> (University of California, Berkeley), and partnered with the Canadian Association on Water Quality Atlantic Region, the International Water Association Young Water Professionals (IWA YWP<\/strong>) Canada, Network of reference laboratories, research centres and related organisations for monitoring of emerging environmental substances (NORMAN Network<\/strong>), and the Journal of Environmental Systems Research<\/strong> (Springer). This is an annual conference of the Network on the Persistent, Emerging, and Organic PoLution in the Environment (PEOPLE Network), funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC<\/strong>). James McGill Professor and Graduate Program Director, Bioresource Engineering, McGill University<\/p>\n

Bio:<\/strong> Vijaya Raghavan, Treasurer, RSC, is a James McGill Professor in the Department of Bioresource Engineering (FAES) at McGill University. He is Graduate Program Director for Bioresource Engineering, He was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) in 2012, and into the Engineering Institute of Canada in 2017. He was President of the Canadian Society for Bioengineering from 2016 to 2017 and was President of the Academy of Science of the RSC from 2017 to 2019. Prof. Raghavan has made key contributions to the development of knowledge and technologies in the area of post-production technologies related to drying, storage, thermal and non-thermal treatments of food, valorization of agricultural and food by-products leading to more than 630 articles, 53 book chapters, and 7 patents\u2026 Read more<\/p>\n

Abstract: Do we consume all the food that we produce? No. Post-harvest losses due to damage, poor storage conditions, rot, pests, and vermin account for 27 to 40% of total global food production. Minimizing post-harvest losses is thus important to ensure food security, the access to safe, nutritious, and affordable food, for a world population that is currently over 7.8 billion. Xu\u2019s research combines state-of-the-art techniques from toxicology, aquatic biology, and omics to understand the impacts of emerging environmental pollutants. His findings on micro-and nanoplastics are featured by Nature, Science, and 300+ global media. He has secured national and international grants of over 1.3 million Euro, and published 70+ peer-reviewed articles in Acc Chem Res, PNAS, ES&T, ES&T Lett, Water Res, ES Nano, J Hazard Mater, etc., with 4 ESI Highly Cited Papers and 2 Hot Paper. University of Southern Denmark is hiring a researcher for a fully funded 3-year postdoctoral position in Ecotoxicogenomics and Nanoplastics. The project on Revealing \u201chidden\u201d plastics using Trinal Oviparous Omics Model (TriOOL)<\/em> will be carried out at the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark (SDU).<\/p>\n

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position, UNBC, Canada <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is searching for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to investigate water security issues in small, rural and remote (SRR) communities. The two-year project is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Project tasks include the development of Indigenous knowledge (IK)-based low-cost methods for water treatment, effective community engagement, and the development of water treatment decision support tools, among others. The project involves researchers from three Canadian universities (UNBC, UBC Okanagan, and McMaster University) and a First Nation community in northern BC.<\/p>\n

Dr. Paul Snelgrove<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

University Research Professor, Memorial University of Newfoundland<\/p>\n

\"A Dr. Snelgrove is a Professor of Ocean Sciences and Biology at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada. From 2008-2021 he led the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Canadian Healthy Oceans Network, a national research network that has developed new tools and approaches to support sustainable oceans. He also currently plays the role of Associate Scientific Director of The Ocean Frontier Institute, which gathers researchers in Atlantic Canada and beyond to advance safe and sustainable ocean objectives. From 2003-2013, Dr. Snelgrove held a Canada Research Chair in Boreal and Cold Ocean Systems, and prior to that an NSERC Industrial Chair in Fisheries Conservation. He led the synthesis of the International Census of Marine Life research program, where he was a member of the program\u2019s Scientific Steering Committee. Over 350,000 people have viewed his TED Global talk on that program. He frequently participates in workshops and conferences around the world as an invited speaker. In 2013, he was awarded the Timothy Parsons Medal for Excellence in Marine Sciences in Canada, and in 2020 he was appointed Departmental Science Advisor to Fisheries and Oceans Canada. His research focuses on sustainability of biodiversity and functioning of seafloor ecosystems.<\/p>\n

Dr. Viviane Yargeau<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"A Prof. Yargeau is a Professor and Department Chair in Chemical Engineering at McGill University as well as an Associate Member of the McGill School of Environment. She established the Controlling Contaminants of Concern (3Cs) laboratory in 2004, which is now internationally recognized for research on the fate and effects of contaminants in the environment and in engineered systems and wastewater treatment. Prof. Yargeau has contributed to creating awareness about the presence and impact of trace contaminants in water as well as the development of improved wastewater treatment technologies and the monitoring of water quality for the protection of our water resources. She has several collaborations at McGill, as well as across Canada, and internationally, in academia as well as with governmental agencies and the industry.<\/p>\n

She also serves as Senior Editor of two scientific journals and the Board of Directors for a publicly traded company. As part of a program sponsored by the International Water Association, she serves as a mentor for young water professionals. In parallel to her academic career, she co-developed two patented products and contributed to the creation and development of the company Earth Alive Clean Technologies that is now selling these products around the world.<\/p>\n

Jonah Toth<\/strong> is a M.Sc. candidate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at McGill University under the co-supervision of Dr. Viviane Yargeau (McGill) and Dr. Vincent Fug\u00e8re (UQTR). His current research aims to optimize methods for monitoring trace pesticide residues in agriculture-adjacent streams. The project contributes important chemical data to a multidisciplinary research team studying the impacts of agricultural intensification and land use management in the Lac Saint-Pierre floodplain. The simultaneous analysis of pesticide residues in stream waters, sediments, and biofilms represents a rare and ambitious opportunity to monitor pesticide residues in the whole of streams. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Jonah is interested in sustainable agricultural practices that minimize environmental impacts while meeting growing global food demands.<\/p>\n
