The PEOPLE 2025 International Conference proudly announced the winners of its prestigious student presentation awards.
PEOPLE Network Student Awards for Best Oral and Poster Presentations were presented with cash prizes to recognize top performers. The awards included $300 for first place in oral presentation, $200 for second place in oral presentation, and $100 each for third place in oral presentation and for the best poster presentation.

- Negar Ahmadi, Memorial University, for “Carbon Dioxide Capture in Canada: Technologies, Policies, and Global Standing.”

First Place: Eleanor Barry, Memorial University, for “The IceShark – An Innovative Method of Capturing Plankton under the Ice.”

First Place (tie): Hongyi Li, Memorial University, for “Fate and Biodegradation of Wood Oil in Cold Marine Environments: Mechanistic Insights and Ecotoxicity Evaluation.”

Second Place: Hongjie Wang, Memorial University, for “A Comprehensive Review of Switchable Biomaterials for Wastewater Treatment: Innovations and Progress.”
- Third Place: Lee Britton, Memorial University, for “A Laboratory Investigation into Oil and Shoreline Sediment Interactions Under the Influence of Temperature.”
Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Award
Hadi Mokarizadeh, University of Alberta, for “Efficiency of Solar-Driven Tin Oxide for Treatment of Real Oil Sands Process Water.” Hadi will receive $500 worth of books from the RSC system.
Philip H. Jones Award Winners
Two winners of the 2025 CAWQ Atlantic Symposium Philip H. Jones Award will also be recognized. The first-place winner will receive a $300 cash prize, the second-place winner will receive $200, and both winners will be granted a one-year membership to the Canadian Association on Water Quality (CAWQ).
